How to Improve Your Reaction Time
The evidence-based guide. What actually works, what doesn't, and how much you can realistically gain. No supplements that don't work, no brain training apps that don't transfer.
The honest answer first
You can improve your reaction time, but the gains are smaller than most people hope. The average person can shave 20–40 milliseconds off their baseline with a few weeks of focused effort. Beyond that, you hit your genetic ceiling — usually around 180–200 ms for most adults — and no amount of training will push you past it.
The good news is that 20–40 ms is meaningful. In a competitive FPS firefight, 30 ms is the difference between getting the first shot off and getting headshot. In a reaction time test, 30 ms can move you from "average" to "above average". The interventions that produce this gain are mostly free and mostly things you should be doing anyway.
The other piece of good news: most people are walking around 20–40 ms below their potential because of fixable factors — poor sleep, dehydration, suboptimal hardware. "Improving" your reaction time is often just a matter of removing the things that are slowing you down.
What actually works, ranked by effect size
The interventions below are listed in roughly the order you should try them. Start at the top — the gains per unit of effort are highest there. Effect sizes are typical ranges drawn from published research; your individual results will vary.

The big four: where to actually focus
You can chase the marginal gains on the table above, but if you only have time for four things, do these. They account for 80% of the improvement most people will ever see.
1. Fix your sleep
This is non-negotiable. One night of 5 hours of sleep adds 10–20 ms to your score the next day. A week of 6-hour nights adds 25–35 ms. Chronic sleep debt of 2+ hours per night for weeks on end can add 40+ ms. If you are not sleeping 7–9 hours consistently, no other intervention will compensate. Get this right first.
The mechanism is simple: sleep is when your brain clears metabolic waste products (via the glymphatic system) and consolidates motor learning. Skimp on sleep and both processes suffer, with measurable effects on RT the next day.
2. Use proper hardware
If you are testing on a laptop trackpad, you are giving up 30–50 ms before you even start. Trackpads have significant debounce latency — they wait to confirm a click is intentional before registering it. A wired gaming mouse has 1–2 ms of latency. A 144 Hz monitor has 7 ms of latency versus 16 ms for a 60 Hz panel. Together, these changes can drop your score by 30+ ms with zero biological change.
You do not need expensive gear. A basic wired Logitech or Razer mouse costs $25–40 and is more than good enough. A 144 Hz monitor costs $150 and is genuinely transformative for any kind of fast-paced visual task. If you are serious about reaction time, these are the best dollars you can spend.
3. Play action video games
This is the most counterintuitive finding in the reaction time literature: playing fast-paced action games actually improves your reflexes, and the improvement transfers to non-gaming tasks. The effect is real, well-replicated, and visible in MRI scans — gamers have enlarged right hippocampus and stronger visuospatial wiring than non-gamers.
The games that work are demanding ones: CS2, Valorant, Apex Legends, Overwatch, Quake. Slow-paced games like Civilization or Stardew Valley do not help. You need about 10–20 hours of play over a few weeks to see measurable gains. The improvement tops out around 30 ms for most people, after which more play does not seem to help further.
4. Move your body
Cardio exercise improves blood flow to the brain and increases BDNF, a protein that supports neural plasticity. Three sessions of 30+ minutes per week, sustained for 4–6 weeks, reliably drops RT by 10–20 ms. The effect persists as long as you keep training and fades within a few weeks of stopping.
The type of cardio matters less than the consistency. Running, cycling, swimming, and rowing all work. High-intensity intervals may have a slight edge over steady-state for cognitive benefits, but the difference is small. Pick something you will actually do consistently — that is the only thing that matters.
What does not work
A surprising number of popular "reaction time boosters" have weak or no evidence behind them. Save your money.
- Brain training apps. Lumosity, Elevate, Peak — they make you better at the specific tasks in the app, but gains do not transfer to reaction time tests or everyday tasks. Multiple large studies have found zero transfer.
- Nootropics and supplements. Most have no effect on RT in healthy adults. The few that show small effects (L-theanine, creatine) require weeks of consistent use for marginal gains. Caffeine is the one exception — it works, but tolerance builds quickly.
- "Reflex trainer" gadgets. Physical reaction trainers (light panels you tap) work for sport-specific practice but do not outperform a free web test for general RT improvement.
- Binaural beats. No solid evidence for RT improvement. The studies that show effects are small, poorly controlled, and fail to replicate.
Putting it together: a 30-day plan
If you want to actually drop your score over the next month, here is a realistic plan. Total time investment: about 3 hours per week, most of it stuff you should be doing anyway.
- Week 1: Get 8 hours of sleep every night. Switch to a wired mouse if you have not already. Test your baseline 3 times and write down the average.
- Week 2: Add three 30-minute cardio sessions. Keep sleeping. Test again at the end of the week.
- Week 3: Add 30 minutes of action gaming 3 times per week (CS2 deathmatch, Apex firing range, etc.). Keep sleeping and exercising. Test again.
- Week 4: Continue all of the above. Test 5 times over the week and average. Compare to your week-1 baseline.
Most people will see a 20–40 ms drop. Some will see more, some less. The variation depends on where you started — if your baseline was already dragged down by poor sleep and a trackpad, you will see big gains. If you were already well-rested and using good hardware, the gains will be smaller.
Whatever your final number, remember that reaction time is just one of many cognitive and physical traits. Being 30 ms faster on a test will not transform your life. But the things that improve reaction time — sleep, exercise, hydration — improve almost everything else too. The score is just a useful proxy.
