How the reaction time test works

The test measures the time between a visual stimulus and your motor response. You click to begin, the panel turns red, and after a random delay between 1.5 and 4.5 seconds it flips to green. The moment it turns green, your brain has to register the colour change, decide to act, and send a signal down your arm to click. We measure that whole chain in milliseconds.

The reason for the random delay is simple: if you knew exactly when green was coming, you could pre-load your click and post absurdly fast times that have nothing to do with actual reaction speed. The random delay forces you to actually wait and react, which is what we want to measure. Clicking during the red phase counts as a false start and you have to redo that round.

Five rounds is the sweet spot. Fewer and a single bad round skews the average; more and people start to lose focus. We then drop the fastest and slowest of the five and average the middle three. This trimmed mean is more stable than a simple average because it removes outliers — a lucky anticipation click on the fast side, or a momentary distraction on the slow side.

What your score means

The median adult reacts to a visual stimulus in about 250 milliseconds. That number comes from a mix of lab studies and aggregated web-test data spanning millions of attempts. If you score under 200 ms, you're in the top 5% of the population — the same neighbourhood as competitive esports players and professional athletes. Below 180 ms is rare and usually indicates either exceptional genetics or a particularly fast monitor and mouse combo.

On the other end, scores above 320 ms are slower than average but not necessarily cause for concern. The most common cause is fatigue — your reaction time slows by 10–20 ms for every hour of sleep debt you carry. Screen glare, a slow monitor, or a wireless mouse can each add 15–30 ms. Try the test first thing in the morning with the lights on and a wired mouse to see your true baseline.
