The average adult reacts to a visual stimulus in about 250 milliseconds. Here is the full breakdown — by percentile, by age, by sport, and the fastest reaction times ever recorded.
So what is the average reaction time?
The headline number you will see quoted everywhere is 250 milliseconds for a simple visual stimulus and about 220 milliseconds for a simple audio stimulus. That is the median for adults in their twenties on a typical modern setup — a 60 Hz monitor and a wired mouse. Half of all adults are faster, half are slower.
But the "average" is a slippery concept here. Reaction time depends heavily on age, lifestyle, hardware, and the type of stimulus. A 14-year-old Counter-Strike player on a 240 Hz monitor with a high-end gaming mouse might post 180 ms. A 65-year-old on a 60 Hz laptop with a trackpad might post 330 ms. Both are normal for their demographic. There is no single "human reaction time."
What we can say is that the distribution of reaction times across the adult population is fairly stable. About two-thirds of adults score between 210 and 290 ms on a simple visual RT test. About 5% score under 195 ms. About 5% score over 360 ms. The bell curve below shows where you sit relative to everyone else.

RT peaks in your late teens and slowly declines. The drop is not dramatic — most adults in their 40s are within 25 ms of their teenage peak. The decline accelerates after 60.

What does it all mean for you?
If you scored somewhere between 200 and 280 ms on the test, congratulations — you are completely normal. There is nothing to fix and nothing to worry about. The bulk of the adult population sits in that range, and most of the variation between individuals comes down to factors that have nothing to do with raw nervous system speed: how much sleep you got, what mouse you are using, how bright your screen is, whether you have had caffeine.
If you scored under 200 ms, you are fast. Whether that is genetics, training, or just a good day is hard to say from a single test. Take it a few more times. If you consistently post under 200 ms, you genuinely have above-average reflexes.
If you scored over 320 ms, do not panic. The most common cause is fatigue or hardware latency, not a slow nervous system. Try the test again with a wired mouse, brighter screen, and a good night's sleep. If you are still posting numbers above 350 ms after a few attempts, that is worth a conversation with a doctor — but in most cases it is environmental.
