Other tests you can run

Six variations on the reaction time test. Each measures a slightly different aspect of how your brain translates signals into action.

Where do you sit? Average reaction time, explained

The numbers below come from a mix of published research and aggregated web-test data. Use them as a rough reference, not a verdict on your nervous system.

The 250 ms myth

The "250 ms average" you see quoted everywhere is the median for adults aged 20–29 on a simple visual RT task. Teenagers are about 15 ms faster; people over 60 are about 60 ms slower. There is no single "human average."

Why we drop fastest and slowest

Single attempts are noisy. Your fastest might be a lucky guess (you started moving before green), and your slowest might be a distraction. Trimming both gives a more honest average.

Reaction time by age

Reaction time peaks in your late teens and slowly declines. The drop isn't dramatic — most adults in their 40s are within 25 ms of their teenage peak.
