What Is a Good Reaction Time?
The honest answer is that it depends on your age, your goals, and what you are comparing against. Here is the full breakdown so you can interpret your score properly.
The short answer
For an adult in their 20s or 30s, anything between 200 and 280 milliseconds on a simple visual reaction time test is completely normal. Below 200 ms is fast. Above 320 ms is slow. Those are the broad strokes — but the honest answer is more nuanced, because what counts as "good" depends on what you are trying to do.
A 250 ms score is mediocre for a competitive Counter-Strike player but excellent for a 65-year-old. A 195 ms score is exceptional for a casual user but only average for an esports professional. The same number can be good or bad depending on the comparison group. This page exists to give you the context to interpret your own score honestly.
By percentile: where you sit in the population
The most useful way to interpret your score is by percentile. If you scored 220 ms, you are faster than roughly 80% of adults — that is a meaningful number regardless of your age or goals. Percentiles are more stable than raw millisecond counts because they automatically adjust for population variation.
- Under 175 ms — top 1%. Elite. Faster than 99% of adults. Comparable to F1 drivers and esports pros.
- 175–195 ms — top 5%. Exceptional. Faster than 95% of adults. Most action gamers and competitive athletes land here.
- 195–215 ms — top 20%. Above average. Faster than 80% of adults. Strong reflexes.
- 215–250 ms — top 50%. The middle of the pack. Faster than the median adult.
- 250–280 ms — bottom 50%. Slower than the median adult but still within the typical range.
- 280–320 ms — bottom 20%. Below average. Often a sign of fatigue or hardware latency rather than slow reflexes.
- Above 320 ms — bottom 5%. Slow. Usually fixable with better sleep, hydration, and a wired mouse.
By age: what's good for your cohort
Reaction time peaks in your late teens and slowly declines, so a "good" score at 18 is different from a good score at 65. Here are rough benchmarks by age group.
- Teens (14–19): 195–235 ms is the normal range. Below 190 ms is excellent.
- Young adults (20–29): 200–280 ms is the normal range. Below 200 ms is excellent.
- Adults (30–39): 210–290 ms is the normal range. Below 210 ms is excellent.
- Middle-aged (40–49): 225–310 ms is the normal range. Below 225 ms is excellent.
- Older adults (50–59): 245–340 ms is the normal range. Below 245 ms is excellent.
- Seniors (60+): 265–400 ms is the normal range. Below 280 ms is excellent.

By goal: what you actually need
Different activities have different reaction time demands. Here is what various goals actually require.
Casual gaming
Most casual games are forgiving — anything under 300 ms is fine for Mario Kart, Stardew Valley, or story-mode RPGs. If you want to play online FPS games without getting crushed, aim for under 250 ms. Below 220 ms and you will be competitive in casual matches.
Competitive FPS gaming
Tier-1 esports pros post 150–180 ms. To compete at a high level in CS2, Valorant, or Apex Legends, you typically need under 220 ms. Under 200 ms puts you in the top tier of public matchmaking. Most players will never get there without dedicated training and good hardware.
Driving
Average drivers react to a sudden hazard (like a child running into the road) in about 700–900 ms — much slower than a simple RT test because the stimulus is unexpected and the response is complex. Professional racing drivers are faster: F1 start-line reactions average 180 ms. For everyday driving, anything under 300 ms on a simple RT test is more than adequate.
Sports
Different sports demand different things. Sprinters need explosive start reactions under 165 ms. Table tennis players need to react to a fast smash in under 200 ms. Goalkeepers need to choose a diving direction in under 250 ms. For most amateur sports, anything under 250 ms is plenty.
Everyday life
For most daily activities, reaction time barely matters. Walking, typing, cooking, conversation — none of these demand sub-300 ms responses. The main everyday situation where reaction time matters is driving, and even there, the relevant measure is choice RT (deciding to brake) which is slower than simple RT.
