Reaction speed vs reaction time — what is the difference?
Reaction time and reaction speed describe the same phenomenon from opposite ends. Reaction time is the latency in milliseconds between a stimulus appearing and your motor response — so lower numbers are better. Reaction speed is the inverse concept — how quickly you react, where higher numbers would be better if we measured in reactions per second.
In practice, everyone uses milliseconds and everyone treats lower as better. Research papers, esports analytics, FIA driver telemetry and humanbenchmark-style web tests all report reaction time in milliseconds. When people search for "reaction speed test" they are looking for the exact same thing as "reaction time test" — a number in milliseconds that tells them how fast they are.
How fast is fast?
The reference distribution below is calibrated against published visual RT research and aggregated web-test data. Use it as a rough guide, not a verdict — your score depends on your hardware, your fatigue level, and your age, all of which shift the number by 10–30 ms.
- Under 175 ms: Elite. Faster than 99% of people. Comparable to esports pros and F1 drivers.
- 175–215 ms: Excellent. Top 5–10% of the population. Most action gamers land here.
- 215–250 ms: Above average. Faster than most adults but not exceptionally so.
- 250–280 ms: Average adult range. The middle of the bell curve.
- 280–320 ms: Below average. Often a sign of fatigue or hardware latency rather than slow reflexes.
- Above 320 ms: Slow. Try the test again with a wired mouse, brighter screen and more sleep.
Reference distribution
These percentiles are derived from a log-normal distribution fitted to a mix of academic studies (Luce 1986, Welford 1980) and the humanbenchmark.com public aggregate of several million attempts. Your individual score will bounce around — that is normal.
